Hey neighbors! Issue No. 4, and it is Oktoberfest weekend. North gets its payback. A year after a walk-off field goal ended their season, the Broncos never trailed and held off the defending state champion Tigers 24-17 at Bronco Stadium on Friday, Sept. 18. Carson Soeken threw three touchdowns, including an 87-yarder to Lincoln Stechman, and Drew Benassi scored twice for the Tigers. North is 3-1, Lee's Summit is 2-2. Link 2 Lee's Summit has the full recap. West fell 34-28 at Raymore-Peculiar despite a 78-yard Chris Harris touchdown, with Mizzou coach Eli Drinkwitz on the sideline to watch his recruit.

Homecoming Friday, Sept. 25. It's homecoming at two schools this weekend. The Tigers host undefeated Raymore-Peculiar at 7 p.m. (tickets) after the LSHS parade at 3 p.m., with the Starry Night dance Saturday. West hosts Blue Springs at 7 p.m. for its homecoming, dance Saturday at 8. North is at Oak Park (tickets) and gets its turn next week: parade Friday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m., the A Night on the Bayou dance Saturday, Oct. 3. Next Friday is also Tigers vs. Titans.

Barnes picks Mizzou. Lee's Summit West power forward Cameron Barnes, 6-foot-8 and back at West after a year at Link Academy, committed to Missouri basketball on Monday. He joins West receiver Chris Harris Jr. as a Titan headed to Columbia. Details

Titans volleyball, Team of the Week. FOX4 named Lee's Summit West its Hy-Vee Team of the Week. Coach Jennifer Morgan's senior-heavy roster returns an All-State libero committed to Mizzou and an All-State setter headed to Denver. Watch the feature

🍺 Oktoberfest is this weekend. Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Green Street festival grounds (209 SE Green St). New this year: $10 admission for ages 10 and up (9 and under free), Friday night 5 to 10 p.m. is 21+ only with a night market, Saturday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a football watch party. Stein hoisting and the Fashion Faceoff run both Friday and Saturday. Military and veterans take 10 percent off with code MILITARY. Get tickets or see the lineup. One note: the forecast has rain in it, so pack a poncho.

Costco opens Friday, Oct. 2. The gas station is already pumping. The warehouse at 1690 NW Chipman Road opens at 9 a.m. a week from tomorrow, with a pharmacy, optical, hearing aid center, and tire center. Costco is offering a $20 or $40 digital shop card to anyone who joins before Nov. 1. The city's public works director told KSHB to expect a few weeks of heavier traffic around 50 and 291 before it settles, and an updated traffic study will follow the opening. Costco's opening page and KSHB on the traffic.

A public fight at City Hall. Mayor Beto Lopez removed Councilmember Hillary Shields as mayor pro tem on Monday and appointed Donnie Funk. Lopez says he lost confidence in her leadership style. Shields says it was retaliation for opposing a mid-term pay raise for the city's two municipal judges, one of whom is the mayor's wife, and made her case at Tuesday's council meeting, which the mayor called slanderous. The mayor recuses himself from court matters and says he never violated that. The pay ordinance advanced 4-3 last week, tied to a new treatment court, and needs five votes at a second reading that has not been scheduled. KSHB, KMBC, and Link 2 Lee's Summit on the ordinance.

Also at council. Dana Arth was sworn in to the District 3 seat, and members got a first look at a roughly $500,000, 12-month traffic study of the 10-mile I-470 stretch from U.S. 50 to U.S. 40. KCTV on the study

LSR7 votes Tuesday. The school board decides Sept. 29 whether to set the levy back at the voter-approved ceiling to close a $7 to $10 million gap. Roughly $372 a year on a $300,000 home if it passes, staff and program cuts on the table if it does not. Our explainer has the background.
