This Week in Lee’s Summit: Issue No. 8

This is the web edition of our weekly newsletter, brought to you by The Lee’s Summit Community Facebook Group. Issue No. 8, Friday, October 23, 2026.
Hey neighbors! Issue No. 8 lands on a Friday again, and it comes with two launches from us: Lee's Summit Openings, a new site that tracks what's opening and being built around town, and an all-new look for The Local Directory. You're hearing about both before anyone else. Plus North's shutout of Liberty, a district softball title, early voting, and a quiet start to Halloween week. If a neighbor would like this, they can sign up at thelocalcommunities.com/newsletter.

Around Town
🗳️ Early voting is open, and we're voting no on city trash. The Nov. 3 ballot asks whether Lee's Summit should provide citywide residential trash collection, replacing the local haulers you choose today with one city contractor. Here's why we're voting no. Lee's Summit's local haulers, including Constable Sanitation, Ted's Trash Service, KC Disposal and Lies Trash Service, have teamed up to ask for a no vote too; their side is at KeepTrashFree.com. In Jackson County, vote early at the Woods Chapel office (500 NE Woods Chapel Rd.) or in Independence, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. plus Saturdays Oct. 24 and Oct. 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; bring a photo ID (details). Lee's Summit residents in Cass County vote at the County Clerk's office in Harrisonville, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 8 a.m. to noon (details).
🕐 Clocks fall back Sunday, Nov. 1. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m., so you get an extra hour of sleep (and a darker drive home).
City and schools under one roof. On Oct. 20 the City Council and the LSR7 board held a joint session at Green Street, with presentations on land for future schools, the 2025 bond, housing and economic development, and no votes taken (agenda). The proposed free-speech rules for Green Street were not adopted; council continued them to Dec. 1. Earlier this month Jackson County awarded the city $3.28 million for a regional backup 911 center and $150,000 toward the all-inclusive playground at Legacy Park (Link 2 Lee's Summit). Watch any meeting on the city's YouTube channel.
LSR7 board. On Oct. 15 the board tabled the roughly $72,000 contract to hold 2027 graduations at Cable Dahmer Arena and will look at holding ceremonies in district stadiums instead at its Nov. 5 work session. It also approved leasing 12 mobile classrooms for Pleasant Lea Middle and Elementary. Details
A new park takes a step forward. Parks and Recreation won a $520,000 federal grant toward phase one of Sylvia Bailey Park at 1800 SE Ranson Rd., planned with a farm-themed playground, trails, a community garden and parking. Details
Road work. The SW River Run Drive and SW Pryor Road intersection closes as early as Monday, Oct. 26 until about the end of November, with school traffic detoured via the new SW 26th Terrace (details). The NW Orchard and NW Central intersection is closed for stormwater work (details), and SW Robin Road and SW Noel Street have daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. closures through the end of October. Heads up for KC commuters: MoDOT plans to fully close I-70 between the stadiums and downtown Kansas City for about 11 months starting in early January.
Get to know your city. Applications for the free 2027 Citizens Leadership Academy open Sunday, Nov. 1; classes run January through May. Details
