This is the web edition of our weekly newsletter, brought to you by The Lee’s Summit Community Facebook Group. Issue No. 5, Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Hey neighbors! Issue No. 5. Costco opens tomorrow morning, the school board made its tax decision, the Tigers knocked off an unbeaten team on homecoming night, and it is Tigers vs. Titans this Friday. Plus a restaurant closing, what council did last week, the garage sale thread, four spotlights, and a new directory member. If a neighbor would like this, they can sign up at thelocalcommunities.com/newsletter.

Tigers take down unbeaten Ray-Pec on homecoming. Tied at 14 with two minutes left, freshman quarterback Brody Hertzog hit Max Trillo for a 39-yard touchdown and Lee's Summit beat previously undefeated Raymore-Peculiar 21-14 on Friday, Sept. 25. Trillo also caught the go-ahead score minutes earlier on a trick play from receiver Xavier Salinas. The Tigers are 3-2. Full recap at Link 2 Lee's Summit

Around the district. North rolled Oak Park 56-13 behind three Bryce Thompson touchdowns and is 4-1. West dropped its homecoming game to Blue Springs 24-13 and sits at 2-3.

This Friday, Oct. 2: Tigers vs. Titans. Lee's Summit hosts Lee's Summit West at 7 p.m. (tickets). It is also homecoming at North: parade at 4 p.m., the Broncos host St. Joseph Central at 7, and the A Night on the Bayou dance is Saturday. Heavy rain is in the forecast through Thursday, so check your school's page before you head out.

Around Town

🛒 Costco opens tomorrow. The warehouse at 1690 NW Chipman Road opens Friday, Oct. 2 at 9 a.m. The gas station has been open for a while. Expect the 50 and 291 area to be slow for the first few weeks. If you join before Nov. 1, Costco is adding a $20 shop card for Gold Star members and $40 for Executive. Costco's opening page

LSR7 raised the levy, but not all the way. On Tuesday the school board voted 5-2 to take back 40 cents of the 65-cent voluntary rollback it granted in 2023, leaving 25 cents in place. The operating levy goes to $4.50 per $100 of assessed value, the total LSR7 levy to $5.37, and the change shows up on December tax bills. Board members Bill Haley and Rodrick Sparks voted no. The district says this avoids the 175 to 225 position cuts it had warned about, and several members said an expense audit should come next. KCTV's report and our explainer on how we got here.

Ancho & Agave has closed. The Mexican restaurant near 50 and Chipman shut its doors Sept. 29. It was the chain's only Missouri location. If you have a gift card, the company says it will refund it in full: email giftcards@anchoandagave.com with the card number, your name, mailing address, and phone. Details

What council did last week. A 9-0 vote to hire HDR for a study of widening I-470 to six lanes from U.S. 50 to U.S. 40, about $500,000, because MoDOT has no money to study it and a finished study helps the city compete for federal dollars. Also approved: a police storefront at Summit Fair for the retail theft unit, a 16-bed memory care home on SE Battery Drive, and the Mayor's Housing Task Force. The municipal court ordinance is expected back on Oct. 6. Link 2 Lee's Summit's roundup

Oktoberfest, by the numbers. The first ticketed, fenced version of the festival ran with 43 vendors instead of the usual 88 after the Chamber scaled it back following June's Downtown Days trouble. The Chamber says it will survey vendors and attendees before planning next year. FOX4's report
