This is the web edition of our weekly newsletter, brought to you by The Lee’s Summit Community Facebook Group. Issue No. 3, Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Hey neighbors! Issue No. 3 is a big one. Plus this weekend’s events and four more local businesses in the spotlight. If a neighbor would like this, they can sign up at thelocalcommunities.com/newsletter.

LS Sports

🏈 Friday night, Sept. 18: Lee's Summit North vs. Lee's Summit. The Broncos host the Tigers at Bronco Stadium at 7 p.m. in what KSHB is calling the biggest high school football game in Missouri this week. Both teams are 2-1. North is ranked No. 3 in the state after last week, and the Tigers are the defending Class 6 champions. KSHB 41 is airing a special edition of Friday Night Football from the stadium. Tickets are on GoFan (your phone is your ticket).

Last Friday's scores. Lee's Summit North 34, Lee's Summit West 7 in the crosstown rivalry. Lee's Summit 6, Oak Park 0 in a defensive slugfest. West is back home Friday, Sept. 25 against Blue Springs.

Coach of the Week. The Chiefs named Lee's Summit West head coach Benny Palmer their Week 1 High School Coach of the Week. Palmer is in his first season leading the Titans after coordinating the Tigers' 2025 state title offense. The honor comes with a $500 Hunt Family Foundation grant for the program. Diamond notes. Tigers softball rolled Kirkwood 11-0 on Sunday, Sept. 13. Good luck to every LS team this week!

Around Town

🎉 Lee's Summit firefighter is going to the Super Bowl. Adam Greeno, a firefighter and EMT at Station No. 3 and the city's Firefighter of the Year, was given tickets to Monday night's Chiefs home opener and asked to throw the first pass. Then the ESPN crew found him and his wife in the upper deck, handed them field passes, and surprised him with Super Bowl tickets for February. "It kind of feels like a dream that happened," he told FOX4. Congratulations, Adam. Watch the story
🍺 Oktoberfest is next weekend, and it works differently this year. The 37th annual Lee's Summit Oktoberfest runs Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 27, and for the first time it is a ticketed, gated festival at a new home: the Green Street festival grounds (209 SE Green St). Admission is $10 for ages 10 and up, and kids 9 and under are free. Friday night (5 to 10 p.m.) is 21+ only with a night market in the Pavilion. Saturday runs 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a football watch party on a jumbo screen. Stein hoisting and the Fashion Faceoff now happen both Friday and Saturday, the Home Brew Tasting is Saturday at 11 a.m. ($35 in advance, $40 at the door), and Hometown Heroes brings a fire truck and a helicopter for the kids. Military and veterans get 10 percent off with code MILITARY. Get tickets or see the full lineup.

Two big moves on Flock cameras. Lee's Summit police now require any outside law enforcement agency to sign a data-protection agreement before it can search Lee's Summit's license plate reader data, and sharing is paused until those agreements exist. Records obtained by KCUR show about 2,700 searches of the city's 55 cameras in the first half of 2026. Then on Wednesday, Gov. Mike Kehoe signed an executive order setting statewide guardrails: most data deleted within 30 days, no selling or sharing by vendors, criminal-justice and lifesaving uses only, and no facial recognition tied to the cameras. The order applies to state and state-funded agencies and asks local departments to follow it voluntarily. KCUR on the LSPD change, the governor's order, and our neutral explainer if you are catching up.

LSR7's $372 question. The school board votes Sept. 29 on whether to set the tax levy back at the voter-approved ceiling to close a $7 to $10 million gap. KCUR reports that would add about $372 a year for a $300,000 home, though tax credits mean many bills would not change. If the board does not act, the district says 175 to 225 positions and/or programs would be on the table for next year. KCUR's report and our explainer.

Measles exposure notice. Jackson County Public Health confirmed a measles case in a vaccinated eastern Jackson County resident. Anyone who was at the county health clinic at 3651 NE Ralph Powell Road on Tuesday, Sept. 8 (8 a.m. to noon) or Thursday, Sept. 10 (noon to 4 p.m.) should watch for symptoms for 21 days and call ahead before visiting a doctor. Officials say the risk is low. Details from KMBC

No charges in the Saveion McConnell shooting. The Johnson County, Missouri prosecutor announced Tuesday he will not charge the Lafayette County deputy who shot and killed the 19-year-old from Lee's Summit near Pittsville on May 1. The prosecutor says body camera footage shows McConnell reaching toward his waistband and that the deputy believed he was armed. McConnell was unarmed, and his family's attorneys call the decision devastating and say their own investigation continues. KMBC's report

Did you see it? A fireball streaked over Lee's Summit around 2 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, and a neighbor caught it on video for KMBC. Sightings came in from Topeka too. Watch the clip
